EL PABELLÓN APOLO

In the early 1950's, the new town of Peterlee in County Durham was undergoing some changes; the initial building designs being rejected on account of subsidence over the coal pits.

These designs by the then chief architect Lubetkin were extremely ambitious and the corporation's development manager was left in a quandary when his chief architect left.

 The manager then spotted the constructions that Pasmore was working on while teaching in the University of Durham nearby and thought that an artist's eye would create a fresh initiative amongst his team of architects.

A virgin plot of land to the south west of the town was allocated to Pasmore, with the sole purpose of devising a new dynamic in the form of the housing and road layout.

During his time as an art consultant Pasmore completed the designs for an independent construction, which was to act as a focal point over a lake in the same south west area. This was completed in 1970 and became known as the Apollo Pavilion.

 A principios de los años 50 la nueva ciudad de Peterlee, en el condado de Durham, estaba llevando a cabo algunos cambios de reordenación urbanística y rediseño de algunas construcciones.

 El proyecto fue encargado en un primer momento a Lubetkin como arquitecto en jefe. Pero su propuesta resultó demasiado ambiciosa y fue rechazada a cuenta de la subsistencia de las minas de carbón. Cuando Lubetkin abandonó, el nuevo gerente de la obra (habiendo visto las construcciones que Pasmore realizaba por esa época mientras trabajaba en la cercana Universidad de Durham) pensó que el artista quizás podría aportar algo al proyecto conjunto; crear alguna iniciativa fresca con el respaldo de un equipo de arquitectos.

Una parcela de tierra virgen al Sureste de la ciudad le fue adjudicada para tal fin. Situada sobre el lago, la construcción que allí se proyectase iba a actuar como un punto focal principal dentro de la "nueva" Peterlee. Victor Pasmore diseñó una construcción independiente, un edificio que quedó finalmente completado en 1970, y al que se le conoce como "Pabellón Apolo".
